Birm USA is a water filter material manufactured by Clack Corporation from the US, widely used in water treatment.
2. Uses of Birm USA
Birm seeds are used to remove alum, iron, and manganese in water. This type of particle acts as an insoluble catalyst, making the oxidation of dissolved and iron compounds in water faster. Therefore, the efficiency of water purification is also higher.
In groundwater, dissolved iron is normally in the colored bicarbonate state due to an excess of carbon dioxide and cannot be filtered. Birm beads as a catalyst between dissolved iron and oxygen compounds enhance the oxidation reactions of Fe++ to Fe+++ and produce precipitated iron hydroxide that can be easily filtered.
Birm seeds are easy to clean by backwashing to remove iron hydroxides. It is not consumed during iron removal and therefore provides a positive economic advantage over other iron removal methods.
Birm USA seeds are also used to reduce manganese. When used to reduce manganese, treated water should have a pH between 8.0 – 9.0 for best results. If both manganese and iron are to be removed, the treated water will have a pH below 8.5.
